ABOUT THE BLACK BULL
One of Haworth's oldest and most iconic drinking establishments, the Black Bull has stood at the top of the village's cobbled Main Street since the 16th century. Built from local millstone grit, the imposing inn overlooks both the village square to the front and several artisan shops from the terrace.
Perfectly placed to enjoy well-deserved refreshments when finally making it to the pinnacle of that pretty but very steep hill, join us on the terrace or forecourt, in the bar or restaurant. You'll find a friendly welcome and a great choice of drinks and food.
Infamously linked to the Bronte sister's only brother Branwell, who frequented the inn regularly, claiming his favoured chair in the small parlour which today makes up half of Branwell's Restaurant, a separate dining area. According to his contemporaries, Branwell would often be found holding court by the fireplace to an audience of weary travellers or locals, regaling them with his entertaining repertoire of worldly discourse & effusive prose. Other stories tell of a drunk Branwell evading discovery by his family by escaping into the graveyard and on to the Parsonage via a kitchen window along the church wall of the Black Bull.
In September 1792 the Black Bull became the seat of the Lodge of the Three Graces Haworth 408, with Branwell serving as secretary at one point. Inside the Black Bull a period masonic seat said to have been used by Branwell is on display and many residents and guests believe the ghost of the sole Bronte son still haunts the Building to this day, in fact the Black Bull was featured on the British TV show Most Haunted and is subject to many ghost hunts+.
The Black Bull has recently undergone a full refurbishment under the careful supervision of our owners Bridgehouse Brewery after becoming one of their newest managed houses.
The Brewery's Pub Company ethos is to restore and maintain their portfolio of establishments in a way that is in keeping with their surroundings and heritage and we believe they have followed through on this when restoring the Bull to its Former Glory.
The Black Bull and The Kings Arms also a Bridgehouse Brewery Pub are the only places in the world where you can buy the Bridgehouse Bronte beers.
